Ancient Cave with a History: The Cave of Munits

It is said that a group of children in 1907 discovered the Cave of Munits. They were exploring an area near their neighborhood when they happened upon the cave’s entrance. The cave had been closed off with rocks and dirt, but it didn't take long for them to clear away all obstructions. Once inside, they found bones scattered across the floor and drawings on the walls. These findings led archaeologists to believe that this was an ancient burial ground, dating back over 200 years ago - one which may have belonged to Native Americans who inhabited Southern California before Europeans arrived in 1769.  Canoga Park, CA can be seen here.

The Cave of Munits is located about 45 miles from Downtown Los Angeles in West Hills, California (about 20 minutes). It's easily accessible from the 101 Freeway and is open to the public. The cave entrance is about 12 feet wide and 20 feet high, so it's not too difficult to get inside. Once you're in, a small room opens up into a larger chamber. This is where most of the drawings are located. You can explore some smaller side chambers. Click here to read about Quimby Park Hiding in Canoga Park, CA: A Hidden Gem.

The cave has a long and mysterious history, dating back to the Native American tribes that once inhabited the area. According to local legend, the cave was used as a place of worship by the tribes, and it is said that they performed religious ceremonies inside its dark chambers. In more recent times, the cave has been used as a hideout by outlaws and smugglers, and it is said that many secrets are hidden inside its dark passages. Today, the Cave of Munits is open to visitors and is a popular tourist attraction. It is well worth a visit for anyone interested in caves or history.
